The growth of the broadcasting industry across most of sub-Saharan
Africa has been continually hampered by a range of common
factors, including: a lack of adequate operating capital;
weak revenue models; a chronic absence of business development
skills and professional expertise; and often antiquated broadcasting
technology.
Consequently, there is a pressing need across sub-Saharan
Africa to build the capacity of the free-to-air broadcasting
industry by:
- facilitating the generation of an effective sub-Saharan
African knowledge dissemination platform, spanning both
radio and television
- developing a best industry practice skills transfer template
and a strong professional capacity building mechanism to
support broadcast station managers and media entrepreneurs
across Africa
- creating a dedicated broadcast fellowship in association
with those African post-graduate mass communications institutions
dedicated to development communications studies
- generating professional regional back-up mechanisms to
assist and support the work of the various national regulatory
bodies across sub-Saharan Africa.
- creating a strong research support faculty and mechanism
that will help regenerate the revenue potential of the independent
and public sector broadcast media sector
The African Public Broadcasting Foundation is committed to
the process of assisting in creating an institutional framework
that will enable the effective capacity building of the free-to-air
broadcasting environment across sub-Saharan Africa
